The rescue occurred at the retention pond at Cedar Crest Village on the evening of Sunday, April 2. Officers responded and found a vehicle submerged almost completely in the water.

Photo and video footage of the rescue shows Sgt. Dericks, Ptl. Parigi and Ptl. Knatz pulling the driver and passenger to safety “as the murky water was filling the vehicle,” the department said as it was released on Wednesday, April 19:

The Pequannock Township First Aid and Rescue Squad also shared the footage alongside a quote from one of the victims.

“A statement made to our EMS Crew on scene by one of those saved: ‘The water was up to my neck… The next thing I know a police officer was helping me out of the car,’” the rescue squad wrote.

“Great job by these officers, who without hesitation -went into the cold water to save two residents.”
